How to Add Custom Questions to Your Peer-to-Peer Campaign

A Peer-to-Peer campaign offers multiple different ways for your supporters to engage with your campaign. They can either be a donor, a fundraiser, or a team captain. All of these different forms of engagement offer unique opportunities for your organization to collect important supporter information through the use of Custom Questions.

In the different Custom Questions settings areas throughout your campaign, Classy provides some commonly asked questions for you, but you can also create your own custom questions to collect more specific information that you need. For example, it may be important for your campaign to collect things like a donor's birthdate, or why a fundraiser chose to support your organization. We offer multiple different question types that will help your supporters give the ideal answers for your purposes. In this article, we'll cover where custom questions can be used, how to create them, and walk through how they will appear in your campaign's reporting.

1. Donation Page, Fundraiser, and Team Custom Questions

If you need to collect additional information from your donors, fundraisers, or team captains we recommend using custom questions. 

To access the Custom Questions settings click the Details tab and select Questions from the left-hand menu.

From here you have the option to set custom questions for your donors, fundraisers, and team captains. You can use what we have seen be the most common custom questions or create your own custom questions. You also always have the option of making your questions required by checking the box next to each question.

If you need to collect some information from your fundraisers or team captains when they sign up for your campaign, we recommend adding some custom questions to your signup flow. These questions will be added as an additional step in the signup process.

2. Creating a Custom Question

Regardless of which aspect of your campaign you are creating a custom question for, the creation process will remain the same. The option to create a custom question will always be below the frequently asked questions that we offer.

In the Question field, write the actual question you wish to ask your supporter.

In the Question Type field you can indicate what the most appropriate field format is for the answers to your questions to be collected in.

Read below for a brief explanation of each of the available question types.

  • Single Line Text - Supporter will have a single line to answer the question.

  • Multiple Line Text - Supporter will have a paragraph to answer the question.

  • Date - Question will be answered with a specific date selected from a calendar.

  • Yes/No - Answer will be either yes or no

  • Dollar Amount - Answer will be a dollar amount (in USD)

  • Event Waiver - The 'answer' to this question is a checkbox that serves as acknowledgement of a waiver.

  • Custom Select List - A multiple choice drop down.  See below for an example: 

Lastly, you can make any custom question required by checking the Required box to the right of the Question Type field.

Important Note: Custom Questions can always be edited or rearranged within your Custom Questions settings as well. Simply start typing in your revised question in the Question field, or drag and drop your question to a new spot in your list of questions. Then click Save Changes for those changes to take effect on your live campaign.

3. How Custom Question Answers Appear in Reporting

Since Custom Questions can be added in three separate places within a campaign, the answers that are submitted will only show up in the report that relates to that interaction. For example:

- Questions on your Donation Page will have their answers recorded in your campaign's Transactions Report.
- Questions asked during the Fundraiser Signup flow will have their answers recorded in your campaign's Fundraising Pages Report.
- Questions asked of your Team Captains while they create their team will be recorded in your campaign's Fundraising Teams Report.

Each question will have it's own column included at the right-most end of your reports, as seen in the screenshot below.
