Adding Custom Questions to Crowdfunding Campaigns

Last Updated: Jun 29, 2016 01:46PM PDT

Interested in collecting information outside of the default name and email fields on your Crowdfunding donation page? Custom questions are the way to go.  Custom questions let you collect information outside of the default questions asked on the donation form. In the Custom Questions settings, we've provided some fairly common questions, but you can also add a completely custom question with a wide range of answer types. You might want to use custom questions to learn: a donor's birthday, how a supporter heard about your organization, why a donor chose to support your organization, and many more reasons to learn more about your donors. In this article, we'll cover how to create custom questions and walkthrough how they'll appear in reporting.

1. Create a Custom Question
2. How Custom Questions Appear on the Donation Page
3. How Custom Questions' Answers Appear in my reporting

1. Create a Custom Question

From the Campaign manager click on the Edit Tab and click on the Donation Page.  From there, select Details and select Custom Questions from the left-hand menu.

Select the Details Tab from the donation page editor and make sure that Custom Questions is selected from the left-hand menu.

Here, you'll be able to choose a standard optional question (like birthday) or create a custom question. Question types including:

  • Single Line Text - Supporter will have a single line to answer the question.

  • Multiple Line Text - Supporter will have a paragraph to answer the question.

  • Date - Question will be answered with a specific date.

  • Yes/No - Answer will be either yes or no

  • Dollar Amount - Answer will be a dollar amount (in USD)

  • Event Waiver - The 'answer' to this question is a checkbox that serves as an acknowledgement of a waiver.

  • Custom Select List - A multiple choice drop down.  See below for an example:

2. How Custom Questions Appear on the Donation Page

Custom questions will appear after the required First Name, Last Name, and Email fields. Optional questions will always be displayed before custom questions. You can reorder custom questions, however, in Custom Questions settings under "Manage Custom Questions." Just drag-and-drop the custom questions and make sure to hit "Save Changes."

Important Note on Custom Question Answers: The order of a question's Custom Select List cannot be changed once the question is created in saved. Remove and re-add the question and its list of options if you need to reorder them.

3. How Custom Question Answers Appear in Reporting

On your campaign's Transactions Report, click the columns button. Then all the way at the bottom, below the Optional Questions select “Show Custom Questions" and click "Save." Voila!  Your custom questions will now show in the far right-hand column of the report.
