Transaction Fee Breakdown For Fee On Top Donations

Last Updated: Aug 31, 2016 02:51PM PDT

Passing on the transaction fee to the buyer is a great option to allow for 100% of the donation to go to the organization. This can be done for donations and also for event tickets/registrations. The only differences is that this option to cover the fee is always at the discretion of the donor. For registrations, this is for the administrator to decide if they want the fee to be passed onto the purchaser.

Please note: If you are using a payment processor other than WePay, then the transaction fee in the Transactions Report will only reflect your Classy fee and will not include the fees from your payment processor because those have been specifically negotiated by your organization.

In this example we will be looking at a donor who decided to cover the cost of the transaction fee with their donation.

1. Identify your Classy transaction fee
2. Identify your payment processing fee
3. Calculate the fees

1. Identify your Classy transaction fee

You can locate your Classy transaction fee by going to the Settings Tab in your Classy account and going to Pricing Plan. In this example the Classy transaction fee is 3%.

2. Identify your payment processing fee

Please note: If you are using Authorize.net or Paypal Pro, the fee for these payment merchants will not be included if the donor elects to cover the fee on their transaction.

The standard WePay transaction fee is 2.2% + $0.30  however there is an additional 1% added for all American Express and International cards used.

3. Calculate the fees

Let's take a look at a supporter who donated $20 using a Visa (or other non American Express credit card). The charged Wepay fee is 2.2% +$0.30, calculated on top of the gross transaction amount.

$21.37 x 2.2% +$0.30= $0.77

Classy calculated our fee from the originally intended donation amount (in this case $20), not the gross amount.

$20 x 3% = $0.60

The transaction fee that you will see in your transactions report is $1.37 which is $0.77 (the WePay fee) + $0.60 (the Classy fee)

This fee calculation flow will be the same if someone purchases a $100 ticket to an event and the fees are passed onto the buyer.

Quick Tips

Extra donation added on top of ticket

Go to the Transactions Report and select extra donation from columns

This might be helpful when you notice that the gross amount includes an amount that is more than just tickets.

A helpful column to utilize in the reporting is extra donation so you can parse out why a transaction fee might be higher for one transaction over another. If an extra donation is made then the transaction fee will reflect that additional amount as well. You can do this by going to the Transactions Report from the Reports Tab and then selecting columns

For donations made with an American Express for WePay (classic only)

Please Note: If a donation is initiated on either a Crowdfunding or new P2P campaign, the checkout form will automatically detect the use of an American Express or international credit card and add the additional fee into the pre calculation of the order total.

Go to Columns and select credit card type and then select save

$159.91 x 3.2% +$0.30= $5.41 The 3.2% includes the 1% added for an American Express card.

The Classy fee takes the fee from the originally intended donation amount, not the gross amount. In this example the Classy fee is taken from the $150

$150 x 3% = $4.50

The transaction fee that you will see in your transactions report is $9.91; which is $5.41 (the WePay fee) + $4.50 (the Classy fee).

Here is a helpful article about how to enable the setting to allow the donor to cover 100% of the transactions fees.
